Longtime Minnesota Zoo Board Member Receives Award
Ned Dayton receives second annual “Stewardship Award”

Apple Valley, MINN – October 1, 2009: – Longtime Minnesota Zoo Board Member Ned Dayton received the Zoo’s second annual Stewardship Award at the fifth annual Director’s Dinner this week.

The Minnesota Zoo’s Stewardship Award recognizes outstanding education and conservation stewardship efforts that generate public awareness and support for saving our world’s wild animals and wild lands.  The award is designed to promote leadership by example, and inspire others to take action on behalf of our world’s wildlife. Ned Dayton

“Ned is a true conservation leader both here in Minnesota and around the world,” said Minnesota Zoo Director/CEO Lee Ehmke. “Ned was instrumental in helping to establish the Zoo’s Adopt-a-Park program that chartered a new course for wildlife conservationists in zoos worldwide. Through this in situ (on location) conservation project, our Zoo–as well as many others –began to adopt parks throughout the world and enabled the zoos to reach beyond their own fences to protect wild animals where they live naturally. Ned has always inspired our staff and Trustees as well as so many others to actively engage in and support efforts to protect wild animals.”

More recently, Ned was instrumental in inspiring Zoo and Foundation Board Trustees to significantly increase their overall financial support of the Zoo.  Thanks to a challenge grant from the Edward Dayton Family Fund, the two Boards raised more than $6 million for Zoo programs.

Dayton has been actively involved with the Minnesota Zoo for many years. He was elected to the Zoo Board in 1987 and chaired it from 1990-1992. He served as the Foundation Chair from 1993-1994 and is still an active member of the Zoo Board.

The Minnesota Zoo is located in Apple Valley, just minutes south of Mall of America. For more information, call 952.431.9500 or visit mnzoo.org.
