Russia’s Grizzly Coast—Fun Facts

Russia’s brown bears are the “cousins” of our western grizzly bear and are among the largest in the world. Sea Otter

Sea otters have the thickest fur of any marine mammal, averaging 850,000 to 1,000,000 per square inch!

The total budget for Russia’s Grizzly Coast is $23.6 million and will be the Zoo’s largest project since the opening of Discovery Bay in 1997.

The Amur leopard is considered critically endangered with fewer than 30 cats remaining in the wild. Boar

Wild boars are very adaptable. In Russia, they are a critical food source for large cats: when the boar decline, so do the cats.

Amur tigers are the largest of all cats and can reach over nine feet in length. Males can weigh up to 550 pounds.

The Minnesota Zoo is recognized internationally for its conservation programs to save tigers from extinction.

The Minnesota Zoo is a member of the Amur Leopard Conservation Initiative, providing significant support to the protection of this rare and beautiful animal.
