Frequently asked questions about Evening Events

Can we have a band or DJ?

  • Yes, you may have a DJ or up to 4 acoustic musicians for your event at the Zoo. Each of our rental spaces has room for dancing. Music levels are strictly controlled by your event manager, for the safety of the animals. Par can lighting is allowed however, we do not allow fog or bubble machines, strobe, laser or cop lights

Can we bring in our own caterer?

  • We are proud to say that Lancer Catering is our exclusive on-site caterer. They offer a complete food and beverage service. Their staff will also work with you to customize the cuisine for your event.

Is there a food and beverage minimum?

  • Yes, it ranges from 1,000-$4,500 depending on night of the week and facility rented.

Do we have to use Lancer's preferred bakery, Buttercream Collection?

  • No, you are free to select the licensed bakery of your choice but if you do so, Lancer does charge a cake cutting fee of $2.00 per person.

Can we decorate the room for our event?

  • Yes, you can within certain parameters. All décor must be pre-approved by your Minnesota Zoo Sales Representative. Any florals must be supplied by a licensed florist or wholesaler- flowers and plants cannot come from home gardens or farmer's markets. All candles must be encased in glass. Live goldfish, mylar shreds, confetti, glitter, balloons, streamers, rice, birdseed, gel candles and liquid bubbles are not allowed on Zoo grounds or in its facilities.

Is there a security charge?

  • Minnesota Zoo security is included with your room rental fee. Events where alcohol is served also require an Apple Valley Police officer hired by the Zoo at an additional charge. Ask your Zoo sales representative for more information.

Can we have alcohol?

  • Yes, alcohol is permitted at Evening Events at the Minnesota Zoo. All alcohol must be provided through Lancer Catering. Lancer Catering carries a liquor license and liability insurance for these events. Alcohol brought in any other way is not permitted on Zoo grounds or in its facilities.

What parts of the Zoo can we see during our event?

  • All Evening Events held at the Minnesota Zoo are held after the Zoo is closed. The only area you and your guests will have access to is the area you have rented for the event.

What are the maximum capacities for your event spaces?

  • Discovery Bay- 240 plated, 240 buffet, 400 vertical reception
  • Asian Tropics- 225 plated, 200 buffet, 300 vertical reception
  • Call of the Wild - 280 plated, 250 buffet, 420 vertical reception

Does it smell like a zoo?

  • The Minnesota Zoo prides itself on the cleanliness of our facility, with staff cleaning the exhibits and common areas every day. Keep in mind that this is a zoo, however. Once your party begins, everyone is having too much fun to notice anything unusual!

What is included in the room rental?

  • Table and chair setup and teardown
  • An event manager on-site for your entire event
  • Zoo security
  • Garbage and electricity

What comes standard with the catering fees?

  • White linens and black skirting
  • China , flatware and stemware
  • Three votive candles per table

How far in advance can we reserve one of your facilities?

  • It is never too early to book an event at the Minnesota Zoo! Since we are one of the Twin Cities' most unique venues, our facilities do fill quickly!

What is your deposit policy?

  • Minnesota Zoo: 50% of the facility rental fee is due within 2 weeks of booking.
  • Lancer Catering: 25% of the food and beverage minimum is due within 2 weeks of booking. Another 25% of the food and beverage minimum is due 6 months before the date. (If the date is 6 months out or less, 50% of the food & beverage is due)
  • All deposits are Non-refundable.

Can ceremonies be held at the Zoo?

  • Yes, ceremonies are possible with the combination of Tropics and Call of the Wild. Tropics will be the site to host a very unique ceremony under a picturesque thatch roof. After the ceremony, guests may view the animals on display while the bride & groom hold their receiving line on the Tropics trail . Afterwards, guests then move to the Call of the Wild where the dinner and dance is held. Please ask your Zoo representative for more details.

Do you have audio/ visual equipment on-site that we can use?

  • We have limited A/V resources on-site depending on the room you choose. Some items may have additional charges. Please ask your Zoo representative for more details.
