The Water Cycle

Description:
The earth's atmosphere keeps evaporating water from disappearing into space. As a result, the water that is flowing in the Mississippi River today, could very well be the same water that snowed down in the Arctic, or washed ashore in Australia in the past. In this experiment you'll create your own cycle of evaporation and rain.

What You'll Need:
Large wide-mouthed jar
Hot water
Ruler
Plastic sandwich bag
Rubber band
Ice cubes or crushed ice

What to Do:
1. Fill jar with about 2 inches of hot tap water to make a mini tropical sea.
2. Quickly insert the bottom of the sandwich bag into the top part of the jar and pull the top of the plastic over the rim, using the rubber band to hold it in place.
3. Fill the plastic bag with ice. Before long, the air in the jar will turn cloudy as the hot water evaporates and rises, and then condenses near the cold ice.
4. Wait 15-20 minutes until the bottom of the plastic bag is covered with water droplets ready to rain down into the jar.
5. You can wait for the "rain drops" to start falling on their own, or jiggle the bag a little to start the shower.
