Victoria Crowned Pigeon

This species is listed as Vulnerable on the 2000 IUCN Redlist and is protected under CITES Appendix II status. The major threats to this species in the wild are habitat alteration, and hunting for food and the pet trade in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Even with protected status in most of its range, these threats continue to be a major problem for wild populations of this species.

In captivity, 27 institutions currently participate in an SSP for this species which manages 60 individual birds. Significant repairing has occurred of late with the hope of more pairs breeding. Captive breeding can be described as inconsistent with a few pairs doing well while the majority of pairs are either not reproducing or being unsuccessful in their nesting efforts. Importation of new founders from Papua, New Guinea has been a priority.
