Przewalski's Horse

This species is considered to be endangered by the USFWS and extinct in the wild by the IUCN. It is protected from trade under Appendix I of CITES. The species, once abundant in Asia and Europe, began to decline along with changing climatic conditions which isolated the areas in which it was able to live and reproduce. The species became extinct in the wild and only through the efforts of a handful of zoos was it saved in captivity. Captive breeding programs for this species have been successful and have brought it back from the brink of total extinction. Reintroduction programs have been established in Mongolia and reintroduced horses are now producing young in the wild. This species is a conservation success story.
