This species is considered to be endangered by the USFWS and
extinct in the wild by the IUCN. It is protected from trade under
Appendix II status of CITES. This species breeds well in captivity
and the current captive population will be expanded to target
levels as holding space becomes available. Current captive population
numbers are being maintained around 200 individuals. A reintroduction
program has been established in East-Central Arizona and West-central
New Mexico and has been flourishing as reintroduction techniques
improve and human tolerance for wild wolves increases. Return
to SSP list.
