This species is listed as endangered by the USFWS, as vulnerable
by the IUCN and is protected from trade under CITES Appendix I.
The SSP for this species is concentrating on research into captive
management in the areas of behavior, reproduction, and husbandry
to increase the captive breeding rate. This species has had a
lot of problems breeding in captivity due to mate incompatibility.
Continued captive research is necessary to combat this problem.
This species does best when pairs are formed prior to 1 year of
age. The first long-term study of radio-collared wild, clouded
leopards has recently been completed in Thailand. A researcher
is currently in the field in Thailand tracking a radio-collared
pregnant female.
The status of the cat in most of its range in the wild is unknown
due to its secretive nature. It is known that the cat is more
common in Thailand. Kittens and youngsters are sometimes seen
for sale in markets in Vietnam and Laos. It is almost definitely
extinct in Taiwan and little is known of its status in other Southeast
Asian countries. There is a need to increase the amount of fieldwork
done on this species, as we know very little about their habits
in the wild.
