  Bali Mynah

Bali Mynah

This species is listed as endangered by the USFWS and critically endangered by the IUCN. It is protected from trade under CITES Appendix I. The Bali mynah SSP has not been involved in situ since rampant corruption, and the political, financial, and social turmoil that has plagued Indonesia for the last 4 years, made it impossible for the SSP to achieve any goals.

One encouraging item: An individual who had been apprehended poaching Bali mynahs in the Bali Barat National Park was recently sentenced to 2 months in jail. This represents the first time anyone has EVER been sent to jail for poaching Bali mynahs. Unfortunately, there are fewer than 10 birds left in the wild, and commercial logging operations are underway in some areas of the park. The wild population may go extinct any day.

Fortunately, the Bali mynah is in relatively good shape in captivity. Managed programs exist in N.A., England, Europe, and Japan that collectively oversee 500 - 600 birds.
