This species is listed as vulnerable by the 2000 IUCN Redlist
and is protected from trade by CITES Appendix II. Its greatest
threats are hunting, capture for the bird trade and habitat destruction
due to agriculture. By 1990, only an estimated 50,000 birds remained.
Its numbers have been declining over its entire range in the last
decade. However, in the last two years population numbers for
this species appear to have taken a turn for the better, as populations
appear to be rebounding somewhat. Nonetheless, key habitat sites
are still in dire need of protection to secure a future for this
species.
