Linne's Two-Toed Sloth

Description: Sloths are unusual animals that wear their fur "upside down," the parting runs along the middle instead of along the spine. Rain, therefore, does not collect in the fur of the belly but drains off to either side. They hang in the treetops by the curved claws of their four limbs, where they are camouflaged from prey by a unique coat of fur where two species of blue-green algae flourish and multiply, turning the fur from brown to green. Adults weigh about 9 – 17 pounds.

The limbs are modified so that the arms are longer than the legs and the narrow hands and feet terminate in long sickle-shaped claws. Fingers and toes are fused and reduced in number to two or three. The Two-toed Sloth has two-toes on the front limbs but actually has three on the back legs.
