Habits and Adaptations: Very little known about habits in the wild. Is known to spend time in shallow water. Probably - like other land tortoises - it is active in early AM and late PM, spending hot times of the day hidden.

Diet: Unknown - probably grasses, succulents, fruits.

Breeding and Maturation: Mound nest built by female. Average clutch size 40 eggs; incubation averages 63-68 days at 29 C (84 F). Hatchlings uniformly brown to grayish brown with a darker plastron. Average hatching size 6-6.6 cm (2.4-2.6 in) long and 47-55 g (1.6-1.9 oz) in weight.

Miscellaneous: Reproductive habits unique. Method of building mound nest distinctive in which tortoise uses a "back sweeping" method of gathering material. Animal faces away from mound and sweeps litter backwards toward mound. It adds litter to nest after eggs are laid and guards it for 2 to 3 days.
