Tiger Conservation at the Minnesota Zoo

Tigers are an endangered species.

100 years ago there were 8 different kinds of tigers (subspecies) - there were over 100,000 wild tigers in the world.

Today, there are 5 tiger subspecies left and there are only about 7,000 wild tigers in the world.

The main threats to tigers are poaching, loss of habitat, and population fragmentation.

POACHING

Even though it is illegal to kill a tiger, wild tigers are still being poached today because their bones, whiskers and other body parts can be sold on the black market for a lot of money.

Tiger parts are used in Traditional Asian Medicine.

HABITAT LOSS

Across all of Asia, forests have fallen for timber or conversion to agriculture.

As forest space is reduced, the number of animals left in the forest is also reduced, and tigers cannot find the prey they need to survive.
