Description: Size is approximately that of a large pony.
Adults reach a height of 13-14 hands (hand is 10.2 cm, 4 in -
therefore 1.3-1.4 m, 4.3-4.7 ft). Length is 2.6-2.9 m (8.5 to
9.5 ft). Tail is 80-120 cm (2.5-4 ft) long. Have a muscular body
and heavy head. Light brown, cream or yellow-gray in color with
a black tail, mane, nostrils and lower legs, and a white muzzle.
The 15-20 cm (6-8 in) mane stands up stiffly, unlike the domestic
horse and cheek tufts are prominent.
Range and Habitat: Originally found throughout the steppes of Eurasia. Forced by human encroachment into the western and northern borders of the Gobi desert. Marginal habitat with stony, sandy soil and shrubby vegetation. Ground water is salty. Assumed to be extinct in the wild.
