Range and Habitat: Inhabits most of the northern coniferous
timbered regions of Alaska, Maine, Western Montana, Northern Idaho,
West Wyoming, Canada and the northern Great Lakes regions (Isle
Royale).
Habits and Adaptations: Shed antlers in early winter (December
and January) and grow them again in early spring. They are strong
swimmers. Form yards in the winter and group together. Most active
at daybreak or dusk. It is not generally gregarious, but is sometimes
found in groups of 3-4 individuals, usually a mother and young.
Diet: Browses on new growth of shrubs and trees. Eats
water vegetation by wading into lakes and streams. Will eat bark
and twigs when food is scarce.
Breeding and Maturation: Mating occurs in September or
October; gestation is 242-250 days; one to three calves born,
usually in late May or June. By the time the calf is 10 days old
it follows the mother and remains with her for up to 2 years;
calf is weaned at 6-8 weeks. Females are sexually mature at 3
years. Live about 20 years.
Miscellaneous: Populations are relatively stable where
found; game animal designation.
