Description: Largest member of the deer family. Head and
body length 2.4-3 m (8-10 ft); shoulder height is 1.2-1.8 m (4-6
ft); weight up to 816 kg (1800 pounds). Adult pelage is dark brown
and black, underparts being lighter in summer; in winter, the
entire pelage is grayer. Young are reddish brown and unlike most
immature members of the family, are not spotted. Broad overhanging
muzzle, massive antlers, heavy mane and the pendulant flap of
skin beneath the throat (called "bell"). Vision seems
poorly developed but hearing and smell senses are acute. Unique
appearance cannot be mistaken for any other creature. French trappers
labeled it "L'original".
