Raccoon
(Procyon lotor)

With nimble fingers and excellent scavenging skills, raccoons can get and eat just about any food. In the wild, they eat crayfish, insects, fruit, and bird eggs but they also find “leftovers” an easy and reliable meal. A nocturnal animal, they forage at night and spend the day in hollow trees.

Description: Usually a grizzled grey in color the most identifiable characteristics are a black mask across the eyes and a bushy tail with anywhere from 4 to 10 black rings. Color variations have been seen from grey to reddish brown to buff. Males are larger than females with weight ranging from 12 to 35 lbs. The tail is 9 – 10 inches. They have very dexterous front feet (hands) and both hands and feet have 5 fingers/toes. They have 40 teeth, which are flat crushing teeth.
