Puma
(Puma concolor)

Threatened Species

Also known as cougars, mountain lions, or panthers, pumas can be found from the northern forests of Canada to the tropical rain forests of South America. Silent and elusive, pumas are rare in Minnesota and few are ever seen in the wild. They spend most of their time following their favorite prey item: deer.

Description: Body length: 105-160 cm (41-62 in); tail: 60-85 cm (23-33 in); weight: up to 100 kg (225 lbs); hair color varies, with red and brown hues predominant; adults have black tails and spots over the eyes; melanistic pumas also exist; cubs covered with black spots which disappear in adult.

Range and Habitat: Originally lived throughout North and South America; now restricted to western Canada and U.S, and South America. Endangered through most of its range, it now lives in remotest possible areas. Habitats vary from northern woods to tropical rainforests. In North America it inhabits rocky terrain with shrubby growth.
