Coyote
(Canis latrans)

Coyotes live just about anywhere: desert, swamps, tundra, grasslands, dense forest and even suburban areas. They are Minnesota's most abundant large predator, eating rabbits, rodents and other small prey.

Description: They are typically 30 - 40 inches in body length with a tail of 12 - 16 inches. Height at the shoulder is 18 - 22 inches. Males weigh 25 to 45 pounds; females weigh 22 to 35 pounds. They resemble small, lean German shepherd dogs. Most coyotes have coarse, long tan or gray hair with orange highlights and dark guard hairs although there is great variation in color from very dark to almost white. The coyote’s most distinguishing characteristics are a bushy tail tipped with black and a narrow pointed muzzle with a white upper lip. Most coyotes run with their tails down.
