Military Macaw

Vulnerable Species

Description: The Military macaw is mostly green with a bright red frontal patch, blue flight feathers, and a pale blue rump. It has a very large beak surrounded by a bare pinkish face traversed by narrow lines of blackish feathers.

Similar species: Military macaws are quite similar to four other species of macaws living near them. The great green macaw which is slightly smaller, is the most like them. It has a more prominent bluish tinge on the hindneck, a wholly black and smaller beak, darker green plumage, and dull red (not orange) on the base of its central tail feathers. This species is probably allopatric (a species that results from geographic separation).

The Chestnut-fronted macaw is smaller and has red underwing coverts. Thick-billed parrots are smaller with short tails. Red-fronted macaws have an orange-red forehead and crown with orange lesser upperwing coverts.

Size and Weight: Length is 75-85cm (29.5-33.5in). Wingspan is 99-109cm (39-43in). Weight can range anywhere from 800-1100g (1.8-2.5lbs).
