Description: Green-cheeked Amazons are a medium-sized, stocky parrot with mostly green plumage, including green cheeks, a red crown and a pale beak. A red patch of feathers is present on the wings but visible only during flight. The tail is yellow tipped.
Similar Species: The Yellow-cheeked Amazon is quite similar, except for a blue crown and yellow markings on the face. The Yellow-headed Amazon also looks similar to the Green-cheeked Amazon, but has a yellow patch on its head.
Size and Weight: This medium-sized parrot is about 30 cm in length and weighs around 300 grams with a wingspan between 194-213 cm.
Diet: Diets in wild populations consist of pine seeds, maize, berries, beans, flowers and acorns.
Habitat and Distribution: These parrots are found in deciduous woodlands, and floodplain forests in tropical lowlands. Green-cheeks are native to northeast Mexico but can be found in the Brownsville, Texas area where food is more readily available in the winter.
